Arthritis can be a debilitating condition, characterized by chronic pain and inflammation. At Cherrish, we are passionate about harnessing the power of nature to potentially alleviate these symptoms. Preliminary studies on Montmorency tart cherries offer hope to arthritis and gout sufferers, a segment often seeking natural remedies for symptom relief.

Montmorency Tart Cherries: From Folklore to Science

For many years, people suffering from arthritis and gout have turned to Montmorency tart cherry juice, attributing relief of their symptoms to this potent fruit. Despite the initial skepticism, scientists have now begun to investigate the potential benefits of tart cherries, unearthing encouraging findings.

The Science Behind Tart Cherries and Arthritis

The scientific community has made strides in understanding the potential effects of Montmorency tart cherries on arthritis and gout. While more research is needed, initial studies show promising results.

Uric Acid Levels

High uric acid levels in the blood are associated with the severe pain experienced during gout attacks. A study conducted at the University of California, Davis, found that healthy women aged 20 to 40 who consumed 2 servings of cherries after fasting overnight showed a 15% reduction in uric acid levels and decreased levels of inflammatory markers such as nitric oxide and C-reactive protein.

A UK study investigated the bioavailability of anthocyanins and the impact on uric acid levels and inflammation using two different doses of Montmorency tart cherry juice concentrate. Results showed a significant reduction in uric acid levels up to eight hours, regardless of the juice dose. While levels gradually returned to their initial state after 24-48 hours, the findings suggest potential benefits for those with or at risk of developing gout.

In a study conducted at Oregon Health and Science University, 20 females with osteoarthritis drank either Montmorency tart cherry juice or a placebo beverage twice daily for 21 days. The tart cherry group saw a significant reduction in the inflammation biomarker, C-reactive protein.
